Psychoeducational Evaluations

Learning disability and twice exceptional

When a flower doesn’t bloom you fix the environment in which it grows, not the flower. — Alexander Den Heijer

Psychoeducational evaluations are assessments of a child’s cognitive abilities and academic skills. Cognitive abilities (considered neuropsychological processes) include attention, memory, processing speed, and executive functioning (i.e., self-management). Also included are reasoning processes in verbal, nonverbal, and visual-spatial areas. Academic skills are more specific and school-based. Knowledge and application of skills in reading, writing, and math provide the foundation for academic levels of functioning. Comprehensive evaluations are further tailored to examine twice-exceptionality, ADHD, executive function deficits, and learning disabilities (e.g., dyslexia, dysgraphia). Evaluations are critical for understanding a child’s capabilities and struggles, as well as determining an appropriate educational environment. Evaluations are for 5 year-olds up to college-aged students and are conducted in Pasadena, MD.

Consultations

Can help when:

  • only a discussion of issues is needed or wanted,

  • prior evaluation was conducted by Dr. Mickenberg and it is time to revisit issues without the need for assessment, or

  • extensive assessment has already taken place. If so, families should first refer to the person who administered the tests and wrote the report.

Consultations cannot provide definitive conclusions or diagnoses, and they are conducted only when approved by Dr. Mickenberg.
